I shamelessly use my son's food allergies as a way to avoid feeding him junk food, and have occasionally even told him that a specific candy wasn't safe for him to eat without even checking the label.
Love it. I do this to avoid family members feeding him junk. I just tell them that they can't feed him anything that I didn't bring with me and it avoids grandma and grandpa feeding him crap while they are babysitting.
Totally understand. My daughter is only 16 mos old but she has never had any candy or chocolate. I know of the safe options to give her but why should I??? She doesn't even know that it exists.

Oh yah - it's the "blessing in disguise" of food allergies.
We do the same as you and the previous commenter!
Now, if only I could get that past my husband... Too bad he can read!
Oohhh, that's sly. SO glad there's at least some kind of advantage you can get out of it!

It is nice to know I am not the only one! Your confessions always sound so much like things I do. Thanks for sharing.
My mom used to do that. One thing I have learned in recent years that many of the candy we thought was safe is not because the way it is processed.
Anything with mixed fruit has to be off limits for me.
