Confessions of a Food Allergy Mom #8

As nervous as the swine flu virus makes me (due to the Kid's asthma and his inability to receive an egg based flu vaccine,) I enjoy seeing every single shopper at the grocery store use the sanitary wipes to clean off their carts, instead of being the only one.

I have actually had people comment on WHY I am using the sanitary wipes. Seems obvious to me! I even use them when my daughter is not with me.

Re: the flu vaccine - my daughter is also allergic to eggs but her allergist skin-tested her with the vaccine and, when it did not cause a reaction, gave her the shot. Does your son react to the vaccine? If he hasn't had a documented reaction to the shot itself, perhaps you could ask your allergist if he would skin-test your son with the vaccine. I have read that most egg-allergic kids don't react to the vaccine.

Leigha, thanks for the suggestion. I will definitely ask the allergist next visit if we could try that

I had the same experience with Leigha. My son rec'd his flu shot in the allergist's office.

You can skin to test to the flu shot, but if your kid continues to be severely egg allergic, he must be skin tested to the flu shot every year. Apparently, the "egginess" of the flu shot changes from year to year. My hope with this swine flu thing is that it will encourage more people to get their flu shot next year and hopefully protect my allergic kids through "herd immunity".

I love this confession! It is just too true.

It is Food Allergy Awareness Week. Read my latest allergy post: Kindergarten Orientation was Exciting

That is so true! And you know what? Neither of my toddlers have had a sniffle since everyone got concerned about the swine flu and started being moderatly hygenic! I love it!

I was so stressed about H1N1...my son is allergic to eggs and we couldn't get into the allergist soon enough to get a skin test of the vaccine. (Sometimes living in a small town really sucks.) Unfortunately, I think we got H1N1...but we've all recovered quite nicely. We had a prescription of Tamiflu ready for my son and it stopped the virus in his tracks. He ended up with a slight cough...a nice loose one that didn't require further treatment. Please check out my blog called Ryan. With Allergies. It's on smalltownmoms.com. Thanks!
