First Day of Second Grade Lunchbox

When I walked into my kiddo's classroom with him yesterday morning, I heard his teacher saying "Wash your hands then swish and swallow, just like last year!"  She moved up a grade with the class, and the entire group was able to stay together.  It's very reassuring, because everyone's already trained in and I don't have to renegotiate class parties or other potentially dangerous situations.

For the momentous first day I packed (turkey) octodogs, fruit skewers on swizzle sticks, pretzels and a big chunk o' leftover chocolate birthday cake with a food pick.  On the side are the usual apple juice/water mix and a somewhat hidden Tyrannosaurus Rex sticker.

I'm sharing The Kid's back to school lunch with Margot's Wholesome Lunchbox event on the 15th of next month at Coffee and Vanilla, just in time for some new ideas to break out of the first lunch rut!

I love and am inspired by your lunches for your allergic boy. I also have an allergic boy, who is not yet in school.

I have a question (this may seem dumb!) Do you chill the lunchbox with the turkey hot dog in there or leave it at room temp? And you warmed it first that morning, right? I am packing two lunches this fall and love your ideas, especially the octopus!

Hi Judy,
In the past when my son's had an early lunch, I've just sent them at room temp, but since his lunch is now at a later time, I'll usually chill them before packing and put a small ice pack in the lunch bag to keep it cool. Thanks for the kind words!
