Mac & "Cheese" Lunch

I know that my son really loves a meal when he asks for the leftovers to be put in his lunchbox the next day.  So it made me smile when he practically begged for a thermos full of the vegan baked macaroni and cheese I made from Daiya chedder shreds.  To go with the warm, filling pasta, I packed some grapes, apple juice in a reusable juice box and a sticker.

This is probably the last lunchbox post before the school break, but I have more lunchbox ideas coming in the New Year!

I stumbled on your blog and wanted to say thank you for all of your helpful information.

My son is 3 years old (allergic to peanuts and eggs), and after reading your blog I feel like I'm not alone. Other families deal with similar issues.

I was wondering if you have a post about starting kindergarten and some precautions to consider? I read that your son has a medic-alert bracelet, is this something that all allergy-kids wear in the U.S.? (I writing from Toronto, Canada although I used to live in NYC up until a year ago).

Thanks again.

Hi Catherine, I'm sorry I didn't answer you sooner. I've been on a little bit of a holiday break.
Starting Kindergarten for your food allergy kid can be absolutely terrifying, but there are some really good resources available. The medic alert bracelets are generally standard for our children, especially if they are going to be out of your care, or if they are still young enough to have trouble articulating their medical condition. (Unfortunately some adults won't believe your child, and the medic alert is "proof".)

This post describes my son's individual health plan. I would also strongly suggest making sure that you provide all of your child's food, or at least have the opportunity to read the label and approve any food that may be given out as a snack or treat.

Since you're in Ontario, your child should be covered by Sabrina's Law. You're in luck that both Anaphylaxis Canada and Kyle Dine are based in Toronto. Two excellent U.S. based organizations are FAAN and Kids with Food Allergies.

Please feel free to email me directly at allergiesmom@gmail.com if you have any other questions. Good luck!
